About William Jennings Bryan
William Jennings Bryan (1860–1925) was an American orator, politician, and three-time presidential candidate for the Democratic Party. Renowned for his advocacy of populism and progressive reforms, he is best remembered for his famous "Cross of Gold" speech at the 1896 Democratic National Convention, which championed the cause of bimetallism. In addition to his political endeavors, Bryan was a prominent figure in the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversy, famously opposing the teaching of evolution in schools during the 1925 Scopes Trial.
