About Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) was a prominent American military leader best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Lee initially served in the U.S. Army and gained recognition for his leadership in the Mexican-American War. After the Civil War, he became a symbol of the South's honor and reconciliation, serving as president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia.
