René Descartes (1596–1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist, widely regarded as the father of modern philosophy. He is best known for his proposition "Cogito, ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am"), which underscores the importance of doubt and inquiry in the pursuit of knowledge. Descartes also made significant contributions to mathematics, particularly in developing Cartesian coordinate systems, which laid the groundwork for analytical geometry.
